Submission Guidelines
Visible Ink is a literary anthology that publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art. Visible Ink was established in 1989 by the Professional Writing and Editing program at RMIT University. Visible Ink’s mission is to publish the finest emerging writing in Australia. We are committed to publishing new and diverse voices, and are keen to publish work that adopts a fresh perspective. Above all, we want to be affected, we want to be moved, and we want to be astounded by your submissions. Give us your best writing, please!
Each issue has a theme. We don’t recommend your taking the theme literally. Think of it as a writing prompt or a loose framework to help give each issue a unique flavour and feel.
We don’t have a specific style guide, but we appreciate your proof-reading your work before submitting it to us.

— Fiction and non-fiction: up to 2,000 words.

— Flash fiction: up to 500 words.

— Poetry: up to 80 lines.

— Artwork: minimum 300DPI.

If you have something you’re not sure would fit neatly into any of these categories, we’d still love to see it.

Do not include any biographical information in the document you submit, nor in the title of your work—Visible Ink pieces are blind read. Please record your name and contact details in your cover letter only.

Writers, please use standard document formats (e.g. .doc. .docx, .rtf, .txt, .odt). When naming your file, use the title of your piece. This makes it easier for us to take it through the peer review process. Regarding flash fiction and poetry, we are happy to accept up to three pieces per submission, please paste these together into a single document and submit them via the standard portal for poetry and flash fiction.

Visual artists, please submit your work as a .jpg or .tiff file. We would appreciate your uploading images no greater than 1MB. Please be prepared with a high-resolution version of your files upon acceptance to the journal (i.e. minimum 300 DPI).
We do not consider previously published works. All submissions must be original, unpublished works. We do not accept simultaneous submissions—submissions may not be submitted or under consideration for publication elsewhere. Unpublished refers to any work not published by print or online publications. Any works published on personal social media are eligible for submission.

You will be paid as follows if your work is accepted for publication (quoted in Australian dollars):

— $75 for longer-form fiction and nonfiction

— $50 for flash-fiction

— $75 for poems 50 lines and above

— $50 for poems below 50 lines

— $50 for artworks

All published works will receive a contributor copy of Visible Ink 2019

The writer will maintain full control of their work. Copyright remains with the author. Likewise, all liability for infringements of copyright rests with the author. If we publish your work, you agree to license us first publication rights of the stated work until the 1st of February 2020. Thereafter, contributors grant Visible Ink a non-exclusive irrevocable license to publish their content in any format. If you do re-publish your work after the exclusion period, we would appreciate an acknowledgement for first publication.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who may submit work to Visible Ink?

We are keen to champion new and diverse voices, and submissions by people of colour as well as LGBTIQ, disabled, First Nations and otherwise marginalised and underrepresented writers are encouraged.

Visible Ink is not a place for hatred or aggression. Any work that is intentionally offensive or distasteful is unlikely to be accepted for publication.

What do you mean by ‘do not include your name anywhere on your submission’?

We want to ensure that submissions are judged on the merit of the writing alone, so we ask you not to include any personal or identifying information in your uploaded work, nor in the title of the work. If you identify yourself within your submission, we will not progress your work through the peer review process.

Please include the following biographical information in your cover letter only: Your name, a 50-word bio, your phone number and email address. Because your submission is linked to your Submittable account, we can easily identify you when your piece is selected.

How long will it take for you to respond?

Sometimes it may take us a while to respond, even if we are interested in discussing publication. Please give us five weeks after our submission deadline to get back to you. If you haven't heard from us within three months of submitting, please assume that we couldn't find a place for your work in this issue of Visible Ink, and know that we thank you for allowing us to read and consider it.

Will I receive feedback on my work?

The editorial team at Visible Ink is unable to provide constructive feedback on your work due to time constraints.

You have the right to know exactly what is happening with the information you provide alongside your submission.

Your name, email address, phone number and writing will be held on file at Submittable. All rights remain with you. We will hold your data for ten years or for the duration of the Visible Ink project— whichever comes first. This information will be used exclusively by the editors at Visible Ink for the purpose of ensuring against resubmission and will not be shared with third-parties or collaborators.

If you require us to remove any personal information we have collected about you, please email your request to and your data will be permanently removed.

Be aware that as your data will be stored with Submittable, you will also be working under their privacy policy, which can be seen at
